School Background
Worcester Academy, with a 191-year history, is the oldest independent school in Worcester. Today, it stands as an exceptional, diverse international school, renowned for its excellence in academics, athletics, and cultural environments.
When I first learned about Worcester Academy, I enjoyed tracing back to the historical story and original purpose behind the founding of the school. These cultural backgrounds help us better understand the educational spirit of an institution.
In 1830, the New England region of the United States (including Massachusetts, Connecticut, and four other northeastern states) was undergoing an educational reform led by President Andrew Jackson. During this Jacksonian Democracy period, the goal of education was to provide opportunities for all social classes, not just the elite.
Against this backdrop, in 1834, Worcester County Manual Labor High School was established. The term “Manual Labor” signaled a school that emphasized both learning and skills training, reflecting the cultural influences of the time. In 1834, America was in the midst of early industrialization and urbanization, with more factories opening in the North and West. People began flocking to cities, and a greater number of individuals needed access to education to transform their lives. Worcester County Manual Labor High School was born out of this cultural context. In 1847, due to rapid development and a focus on academic education, it officially changed its name to Worcester Academy.
Worcester Academy Motto: Achieve the Honorable
Core Values: HONOR, RESPECT, COMMUNITY, PERSONAL GROWTH, CHALLENGE
Therefore, when Worcester Academy talks about “Achieve the Honorable,” it’s not referring to a relentless pursuit of academics, but rather to achieving personal growth, embracing openness, and respecting others. Rooted in its cultural background, the school actively promotes personal growth, providing enriching opportunities for all students—whether they are “mainstream” students or international students who may need extra time to adjust and feel at home.
School Background
*Development and Thriving:
From a broader perspective, Worcester Academy is a vibrant and growing community. By 2025, the school has shown extremely positive results in both its development and students’ academic achievements.
In 2025, Worcester Academy invested in the construction of a state-of-the-art campus, including the significant New Balance Performance Park, which will serve as the school’s newest gateway. The Capozzoli Athletic Center at New Balance Performance Park will feature a 6,000 square-foot fitness center, 3 basketball courts, and a 6-lane pool.
I firmly believe that one of the reasons supporting the school’s development of a new campus is to provide students with excellent athletic and academic education. On the other hand, with increasing internationalization, more and more students are joining, bringing about a very positive development trend.
*Excellence in Mathematics, Sports, and Curriculum Design:
Tracing back to 2011, Worcester Academy has won the Worcester County Mathematics League championship seven times consecutively, along with its fourth New England championship. Even now, I have led our math varsity team to win the WCML first place twice. Therefore, Worcester Academy is a school with a strong tradition in mathematics.
In sports, our school excels in basketball, ice hockey, football, and track and field, offering over 14 sports programs. Worcester Academy is also committed to nurturing professional athletes, which is evident in its significant investment in new sports facilities. For example, in 2024, a senior on the basketball team earned a spot at Harvard.
*Sufficient Student Attention, Educational Resources, and Diverse Curriculum:
The curriculum at Worcester Academy offers freedom and diversity. Before evaluating the quality of education, it’s important to highlight the Student-Teacher Ratio of 7:1. Notably, in Niche’s rankings, Worcester Academy has received an Overall A+ rating, with Academics also earning an A+ score.
I believe the reason for this is: a focus on individual education, matching learning resources, and a diverse curriculum.
From my personal experience, due to my strong performance in mathematics, the current math courses offered are unable to satisfy my pursuit of higher-level mathematical content. In most schools, I might receive an email saying, “Sorry, we cannot meet your needs.” However, at Worcester Academy, I was given the opportunity to participate in the design of a new advanced math course to ensure I receive a better education in the new grade.
Similarly, in terms of curriculum design, the school offers nine diverse subject blocks for both middle and high school levels. For example, in the school’s strong mathematics and computer science block, courses such as Data Science, Computer Science, and Robotics are available. In the science block, courses like Epidemiology, Anatomy, and Ocean Science are offered. The arts block even includes courses in Performance, Playwriting, and Directing.
For advanced courses, there are 19 Honor courses and 21 AP courses. As a result, students can always find—or even design—a curriculum that meets their individual academic needs.
As for the B+ rating for teachers, on one hand, I believe it is a rating that should be updated. On the other hand, objectively speaking, the school has already matched enough learning resources to adequately support students in pursuing more advanced academic content, whether through participation in advanced research activities or pre-college programs.
Student Experience
*Attention to Individual Students:
The Worcester Academy team is dynamic and responsible. In fact, many people might consider me a student who tends to be overly meticulous and detail-oriented. I maintain frequent communication with various faculty members through emails, alongside my family.
My mother, who lives on another continent, is always concerned about my school life, which is a common worry among parents. At Worcester Academy, they provide regular reports, capturing the little moments of student life—such as noting that I went out twice this month or returned late once. My academic reports include thoughtful comments from each of my teachers, offering insights into both my academic progress and my overall well-being. While students may not fully understand, for their families, this is an important part of ensuring peace of mind.
As for my personal experience, the high-quality boarding conditions are an essential part of helping me adapt to life here. 35% of Upper School students board full-time. Here, I can enjoy my free time while balancing my studies and personal life (I even have time to take photos of the school!).
*Worcester Academy is Striving to Become an International High School:
In recent years, it’s clear that Worcester Academy has been making efforts to integrate all students into the community. They are genuinely working to build an international and harmonious environment.
In the fall of 2024, my parents participated in an exchange meeting hosted by Worcester Academy in Shanghai, China. During this event, the headmaster shared an overview of the school, future strategies, and the application performance of recent years with Chinese parents.
A high school is taking responsibility for its global community of parents and academics. As a result, most parents believe that Worcester Academy will establish an open-minded and internationally-oriented academic community. For students, it provides learning resources, while for parents, it creates a platform for mutual recognition.
Currently, our students come from:
- 20 countries
- 17 states
- 88 towns and cities across Massachusetts
In Worcester, a vibrant city, we will enjoy its rich academic resources and beautiful environment. At Worcester Academy, this emerging starting point blends academics and athletics, allowing students to chart their own path, and to move forward with an international perspective alongside their peers.
